Why I should use Panopto to host my lectures?

The University's preferred video hosting platform for timetabled lectures is Panopto as this supports the Listen Again service and provides a fully supported, auditable and consistent approach for students. Avoiding Listen Again may have wider consequences.  For example, information from Listen Again feeds into the module directory (module outline) and LEAP (engagement monitoring). University teams are also more able to support Panopto/Listen Again directly.

Student's overall experience of blended learning at the University should offer a consistent approach across modules and departments, using recognisable and supported systems. Zoom and Panopto compress recordings and can be streamed at 576p on Listen Again allowing for those whose internet connection is poor and advice can be sought from IT Support where students are experiencing access issues.

Additionally, using other services may result in:

  • Loss of integration with other university services
  • Unwanted advertisements displayed in your learning materials
  • Students can forward unlisted YouTube links anywhere, and there are no audit logs for these recordings
  • Reduced support available from the university should there be any technical issues

If you feel another solution is required instead of Panopto/Listen Again  for your specific needs we would recommend you speak to the IT Support team for advice first desk@essex.ac.uk. There may be more suitable services available before considering external and unsupported platforms. For example MS Stream is available in your Microsoft 365 account, more information.
