Become a Dementia Friend

by Marty Jacobs -

Join staff from the School of Health and Social Care for a free interactive Information Session to learn how dementia affects a person, and what you can do to make a difference. This event has been organised to support Dementia Action Week (20th to 26th May).

Become a Dementia Friend and join more than 2 million others taking action. From being more patient in a shop queue to campaigning for change, every action counts. The University is committed to making our living and learning community as inclusive as possible. Becoming a Dementia Friend is one way you can help us do this.

Dementia is caused when disease or injury causes damage to the brain. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer's Disease, but other types also include vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and Pick's disease.

The word "dementia" is an umbrella term to describe a set of symptoms that might include memory loss, difficulties with thinking, problem-solving and language processing. A person living with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behaviour.

Anyone of any age can become a Dementia Friend.

This event is open to both students and staff at the University. It takes place at 2pm today in Room 2S2.4.18 in the School of Health and Social Care building. The session only lasts 45 minutes.
