Conservation Management & Practice focuses on key aspects of the practicalities of the conservation and management of species and habitats. Specifically, zoo legislation and governance, environmental enrichment and breeding techniques for conservation of species. Nature conservation and the factors that influence it along with landscape scale conservation and providing the evidence base will be discussed, using coastal grazing marsh as a case study. We will include specific site assessments around Essex taking into account evaluation, implementation and management planning. Detailed case studies will be used from both Colchester Zoo and Essex Wildlife Trust.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge of zoos and their role in species reintroduction and in-situ conservation techniques;
2. discuss the use of zoos for species conservation management, and describe some of their main day-to-day management and funding issues;
3. discuss animal welfare in zoos and demonstrate practical enclosure design skills;
4. discuss the work of local wildlife trusts in relation to conservation management of coastal grazing marsh;
5. demonstrate knowledge of site assessment, evaluation and management planning for habitat conservation.
