In this module you will study the world trading system and the most important international institutions involved in the control of international trade. The main institutions covered are the GATT, the UNCTAD and, in much more detail, the WTO. We examine their organisational structures, their powers and objectives and the associated outcomes for world trade. The module takes a historical approach spanning the period from the 1930s to the present. Along the way, we will discuss issues related to international relations, policies and negotiations, the applied analysis of trade data, international migration, and Brexit.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will have obtained insights into some of the most important issues of international trade history and policy, the role of the main international agencies involved, and the outcomes for different countries and regions. On completion of the course you will have deepened your understanding of the evolution of the international economy. You will also have improved your written communication skills in preparing the term paper for the course.
