The aim of this module is to develop your understanding of functional anatomy and physiology, from the cellular level to the level of tissues, organs and organ systems. The material covered, in lectures and practical classes will provide a foundation for more advanced study of Exercise Physiology (in year 2).
The module will explore how oxygen enters into the body and its journey around the body in the blood. Further how the body is controlled by the nervous system and the endocrine system and how homeostasis is maintained will be discussed, including how the body defends itself against "foreign" microorganisms and the role the integument system plays not only as the first line of defence but the other important functions it has. The movement of the body by the musculoskeletal system will be explored. Key terminology used in anatomy and physiology as well as the techniques that have enabled the anatomy and physiology to be understood will be addressed.
