Module Description

This module we will provide an integrative overview of the field of abnormal psychology. The first lecture will introduce the module and the field of abnormal psychology. Subsequent lectures will focus on different psychopathologies, including anxiety disorders, mood disorders, eating disorders, dissociative disorders, schizophrenia, and neurodevelopmental disorders. The final two lectures will provide a view of abnormal psychology from a neuroscientific perspective. Teaching sessions will consist of 10 x 2-hour lectures. 

 Aims

This module aims to:

  1. provide knowledge to critically distinguish normal from abnormal behaviour;
  2. provide knowledge to classify psychological symptoms and disorders;
  3. provide significant understanding of the potential interplay between biological, psychological, social and environmental factors in explaining abnormal behaviour.

 Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this module will be able to:

  1. describe abnormal behaviour and psychological disorders with an integrative view;
  2. compare and contrast different psychological disorders at different levels (e.g., genetic, neuroscientific, behavioural and social);
