Aims and objectives
Chinese One is part of the Languages for All programme. It aims to provide students with
a. the basic language necessary to communicate in Mandarin Chinese in simple, everyday tasks and situations related to living, studying or working in China,
b. the ability to pronounce Mandarin Chinese with the help of pinyin,
c. the ability to form simple Chinese sentences and understand a bit more complex sentences,
d. the ability to write Chinese characters including basic strokes and radicals,
e. the ability to ask and answer basic questions,
f. an introduction to Chinese culture,
g. the basic language study skills to ensure progression in language proficiency.
The main goal of Chinese Beginners One is to help students acquire the basic language skills needed to cope with simple, everyday conversations in Mandarin Chinese, read some small Chinese stories, and write simple Chinese sentences. Students also learn about aspects of life and culture in old and present-day China.
Among the topics taught in Chinese One are the following:
* pinyin as a pronunciation tool and its rules;
* daily and seasonal greetings and basic manners;
* introduction of oneself and one's family to other people;
* using numbers such as age, telephone number, dates, time;
* ordering food and drinks;
* likes and dislikes;
* talking about hobbies, study and works;
* identifying directions and locations;
* expressing feelings; etc.
