This module will introduce students to key legal issues affecting the provision of the Internet. It will focus on infrastructure and intermediaries, not content. The module will start with a consideration of theories about 'internet exceptionalism' and how law and the internet interact. It will familiarise the student with the internet governance structure and then introduce students to relevant regulatory provisions and case law relating to infrastructure and intermediaries from the perspective of UK law. Issues include privacy and surveillance, ISP liability and 'net neutrality'.
