Work based learning is the bringing together of self-knowledge, expertise at work and formal knowledge. It takes a structured and learner-managed approach, maximising opportunities for learning and professional development in the workplace (Flanagan et al 2000).

Work based learning is designed to enable you to develop the skills you need to be a reflective practitioner. It also offers a means of linking theory to practice and, a means of valuing practice, as an integral part of professional education (Hargreaves 1996).

Work based learning places control over the learning process in your hands: you negotiate your own learning contract with your academic supervisor and practice supervisor. This will set out what you want to learn, what action you will need you take to achieve it, and what evidence will demonstrate that achievement (Walker and Dewar 2000).
