This course examines the history of and contemporary debates around theoretical criminology, criminalisation, globalisation, social deviance, the development of social control, surveillance and punishment, and the links between criminological analysis and social theory. We will address and consider key texts and research studies that have made a significant contribution to challenging our conventional understanding of the problem of crime and what to do about it. In particular, we will look at the emerging horizons for criminology by close readings of recent works by leading authors in the field.
