The Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice (PG CHEP) is managed and delivered by Organisational Development and is one of several professional development programmes and processes which the University offers. PG CHEP is available to staff at Essex - and the University’s UK partner institutions - involved with teaching and/or research in a Higher Education context.

The programme provides opportunities for you to plan, record and evidence professional development in three areas: Learning and Teaching; Research and Scholarly Activity; and Teaching-related Administration, Management and Leadership. It thereby enables you to gain academic credit for the work you carry out on a daily basis in your professional capacity.

This part-time programme is divided into two modules, both of which emphasise the value of structured, work-based learning and provide opportunities to participate in seminars and workshops as well as in supported and independent study and reflective practice. The flexible nature of the programme allows you to plan your participation to suit your interests and levels of experience, and to adapt to changes and developments in your role and responsibilities.

The Postgraduate Certificate (Modules 1 and 2) is usually taken between a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years. All participants must complete the PG CHEP programme within five years of initial registration. Participants who successfully complete Module 1 will also receive Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy.

This PG CHEP programme is aimed at new, early-career academic and senior academic support staff that fulfil the minimum entry requirements , especially those with a probationary or professional development requirement to gain recognition and/or qualification for their teaching and support of learning. New academic staff with less than three years’ full-time teaching experience are strongly encouraged to follow PG CHEP Module 1 to gain Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
