This module looks at varieties of English across the English-speaking world, including the British Isles, North America and the southern hemisphere. The focus is on phonological variation, although syntactic, morphological and lexical features are also considered.

The module will discuss the salient features of Welsh English as an 'extra-territorial' variety, English in Scotland including Scots vs. Scottish English, English in Ireland including the influence of Gaelic, American English and variation within North America, as well as varieties of English spoken in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Aims

* To familiarise students with varieties of English spoken in different parts of the world
* To introduce students to phonological, syntactic, morphological and lexical features of these varieties
* To compare and contrast the different varieties of English in focus and to shed light on their origins
* To enable students to develop an informed view of the varieties of English that exist across the world
* To provide practice in linguistic analysis, phonetic transcription and elementary auditory training


Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students will have:

1. an appreciation of the nature and characteristics of varieties of English spoken in different geographical locations across the world.

2. an understanding of historical and sociolinguistic influences on these varieties.

3. gained insight into aspects of phonology, syntax, morphology and lexis associated with the different varieties of English covered in the module.

4. improved their transferable skills in the areas of team work as well as more specifically in auditory perception and phonetic transcription.
