The module introduces the fundamentals of contemporary language teaching practice, showing how classroom practice is shaped by theoretical considerations from a cross-disciplinary perspective which includes linguistics, pedagogy and psychology. The module looks at the variety, purpose, content and contexts of ELT with a focus on the classroom, the language, and the participants in the learning/teaching process. Five main areas are considered as follows: contextualisation and classroom management issues; the role of the teacher; aspects of language, focus on language learning; and focus on language teaching.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students will:
(a) be familiar with some of the main issues relating to TEFL
(b) become aware of some of the factors influencing second language learning
(c) become aware of how factors influencing second language learning can, when appropriate, inform pedagogical practice
(d) have an awareness of varied perspectives to teaching vocabulary, grammar, comprehension and communication skills
