This module looks at the way different aspects of gender, race and class interact in relation to various forms of inequality and identity. It is divided into two parts: The first considers the tradition of class analysis, and the problems which have confronted attempts to operationalise the concept of class; the second considers citizenship as an approach to inequality, based on the claims the individuals can make on the state.
By the end of the course you should have a good understanding of the concepts of race class and gender, and of their interconnections in relation to different aspects of social inequality. You will have a basic grasp of some of the problems associated with class analysis, and an understanding of citizenship rights in relation to inclusion and exclusion.
