The aim of the module is to introduce students to the use of nutritional and biochemical manipulations of human performance. Half of the course will focus on dietary (macronutrient) manipulations and the use of permitted nutritional supplements (ergogenic aids) and half on banned performance-enhancing drugs. Particular attention will be paid to the biochemical and physiological mechanisms of how these aids work and the methods by which their efficacy can be tested.
Learning Outcomes:
To pass this module students will need to be able to:
1. discuss the role of nutrition and permitted and banned ergogenic aids in affecting sporting performance;
2. discuss the mechanisms underpinning the effects of nutrition and permitted and banned ergogenic aids in affecting sporting performance;
3. demonstrate competence in the analysis of relevant experimental data;
4. demonstrate competence in written, web based and oral communication.
