Can Moodle display mathematical and scientific equations?

Yes, you can use TeX notation in Moodle by surrounding your text with double dollar signs. Moodle also supports the LaTeX typesetting system.

Put two dollar signs before your notation and two dollar signs after. When using LaTeX, you can use a backslash-square bracket combination instead, e.g. \] equation here \]. Note: This is a better method because it automatically checks your equations for errors.

You can also add equations using the equation editor in the default Moodle text editor (Atto).

The TeX filter makes it easy for you to add mathematical equations to all of the built-in resources and activities available in Moodle, e.g. pages, books, lessons, forums and quizzes.

Here are some example formulas using the filter in Moodle:

E=mc^2

 x\ =\ \frac{\sqrt{144}}{2}\ \times\ (y\ +\ 12)

For equations to display correctly, you need to make sure that the filter is enabled. Go to the edit cog (top right-hand corner of the page) and select "Filters" from the drop-down menu that appears. Check that "TeX notation" is set to "yes" (it should be because this is the default settings for our Moodle site).

More information about TeX notation is available on Moodle Docs.
