In the first year of the DClinPsych programme, trainees complete two supervised practice placements (or their equivalent), involving work with adults and older adults. This module (HS761) involves the processes and assessments relating to the development of ten core competencies at a level commensurate with the first year of training and relevant to working with adults and older adults.
This module is taken by trainees on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsych) programme in the first year of training. It comprises three topic areas namely Adult Mental Health, Older Adult Mental Health and Neuropsychology and aims to provide trainees with the knowledge, understanding and competencies required to provide clinical psychological services to Adults, Older Adults and people who require neuropsychological assessment and related interventions.
This module aims to enable clinical psychology trainees to develop the knowledge, skills and values which will enable them to plan and conduct research relevant to clinical psychology in health, social care or community settings. This module runs throughout the 3 terms of the first year. In the course of the first year, trainees complete the Masters-level HS945, which provides a basic foundation for subsequent research competency development. This doctoral level module supplements trainee learning on HS945 and provides trainees with a more complex range of skills and competencies required for subsequent research in the course of the training programme for DClinPsych.

During term time, the fortnightly clinical seminars foster reflective practice in relation to trainees experience of training and their clinical practice placements. The regular reflective group likewise aims to further develop trainees reflective practice. The diversity topic focuses on diversity issues relevant to clinical psychology practice, theory and research. The professional issues topic area encompasses a broad range of topics mainly focused on the development of aspects of the professional role and identity of clinical psychologist trainees with reference to various relevant organisation, employment, statutory, regulatory and professional policies, codes of conduct and guidance
HS765 is undertaken in all three terms of year one of the DClinPsych. It lays the foundation of clinical skills needed to work with adults and older people in the NHS and private and voluntary sector. This includes both generic clinical skills and specific skills in two major approaches cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy. The module combines a range of approaches to facilitate trainees development of knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to CBT and psychodynamic therapy.
