Module Outline (updated February 2014)

Compulsory: BA Art History; BA Art History (IYA)
Optional: All other BA courses with Art History. Also available as an outside option and to students on an international exchange programme.

This module offers an introduction to one of the most vibrant and multifacetted artistic formations of the Victorian period. We will explore the origins of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, their `fight for art`, and the hostile reviews they faced. We will investigate what was controversial, new and exciting about their art. We will discuss notions of the avant-garde and images of the artist the Pre-Raphaelites constructed for themselves. We will analyse the work of all the main members of the Brotherhood as well as of some of their followers. We will seek to describe and analyse their various conceptions of art and how it impacted on Victorian life.
