This course examines the relationships between education and society by reviewing a variety of theoretical perspectives and empirical studies. Topics include social mobility and stratification; social reproduction; the dynamics of race, class, and gender in education; social capital; curricula formation; and higher education.
The course aims to provide:
- familiarity with major sociological theoretical perspectives on education
- the ability to analyze educational processes through a sociological lens - an approach that incorporates both individuals and institutions
- understanding of how social inequalities in regard to race, ethnicity, class and gender affect educational outcomes
