This module is designed to give students, new to the English Legal System, an introduction to the study of law. As a compulsory 15 credit-bearing element of the PG Diploma in English for Academic Purposes & Law (supplied in conjunction with the International Academy) this module will, together with the other 45 required 'law' credits supply the students with a sufficient understanding of English Law to undertake one of the School of Law's LLM schemes. The four elements of the module are listed below:
1 The court system and the law making process in the United Kingdom; and
2 An introduction to the UK's legal system in its international context;
4 An introduction to legal theory;
3 An introduction to the importance of personal and professional development.
Upon successful completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate familiarity with both the 'hard' and 'soft' skills taught. In terms of the former, the students should be able to demonstrate (both in any 'Legal Systems' written work, and perhaps more importantly, in the written work submitted as part of all law modules) a thorough knowledge of the 'substantive' law taught.
The 'soft' skills of the students will also demonstrate an ability to present written work of an appropriate standard, to organise their time and their work and demonstrate a professional attitude to their studies.
