This module is designed to raise awareness of language classroom practice, and to encourage reflection on EFL classroom interactions. A variety of specific (descriptive) observation tasks will focus on different aspects of language teaching and learning, including how a lesson is organised and structured, how language is presented, elicited or practised, how activities are set up and monitored, how errors are corrected and feedback is given. Students will learn how to record and analyze objectively data concerning classroom interactions, and to reflect on the implications of these for their own teaching. The module will be based on the real time observation of eight one-hour classes taught by experienced language teachers. Follow-up classes will further pursue issues raised.

By the end of the module you will be able to:

1. Use different observation schedules to identify techniques and strategies used by experienced EFL teachers.
2. Record and analyse data collected describing classroom contexts and interactions.
3. Use the information collected through observation to develop a deeper understanding of why teachers act the way they do.
4. Identify techniques and practices that you can apply later in your own teaching.
5. Appreciate the professional value of observation and be sensitive to its development purposes and co-operative nature.
6. Pursue 'action research' projects of your own based on the observation of classroom practice.
