This is a thematic and language module for students who have an A level in Portuguese or equivalent knowledge. It sets out to introduce students to the use of the Portuguese language in key contexts of Brazilian life: business, culture and society. The module consists of three different units which will have culture in a broader sense as a common thread. The first unit will explore the culture of business in Brazil, looking at written and oral texts such as business letters, short reports, the language of job interviews and meetings. The second unit will look at a particular Brazilian cultural movement, the Bossa Nova through cinema and popular music. 'Bossa Nova' has been one of the most influential cultural movements in Brazil and remains part of the musical culture of younger generations. Finally, the third unit will explore the culture of the 'favela', where students will be introduced to the world of the 'favelas' in Rio de Janeiro by looking at its representation in the media (both British and Brazilian), in the cinema and in popular music.
At the end of the module students will have developed an awareness of key topics of Brazilian life. They will also have developed oral, reading, listening and writing skills in Portuguese. Furthermore, they will have developed an ability to identify different registers, styles and rhetorical aspects of oral and written texts in Portuguese. They will have developed academic, transferable study skills such as independent learning, critical, analytical thinking, problem-solving, team-working, planning and delivering oral presentations, time-management, and use of electronic media.
