This module is open for students who passed LA 340 or have equivalent knowledge of Portuguese. It is designed to further develop and consolidate advanced language skills in Portuguese through different aspects of Brazilian and Portuguese culture and society. This module will make extensive use of authentic and online materials where the emphasis will be placed on the critical analysis and differentiation of text types and genres in context. At the end of the module students should be able to
* Demonstrate complex understanding, critical evaluation and synthesis of texts from newspapers, magazines, some specialist literature and also of literary texts.
* Write texts in Portuguese on different specialized topics in the field of culture and society.
* Interact in everyday oral situations as well as in discussions on specialized topics with due regard for register and setting.
* Demonstrate critical understanding, critical evaluation and synthesis of aural texts in the form of dialogues, interviews, documentaries, films etc.
* Demonstrate a thorough critical awareness of key aspects of Brazilian and Portuguese culture and society.
* Have developed academic, transferable study skills such as independent learning, critical, analytical thinking, problem-solving, team-working, planning and delivering oral presentations, time-management, use of electronic media.
* Demonstrate complex understanding, critical evaluation and synthesis of texts from newspapers, magazines, some specialist literature and also of literary texts.
