This module is undertaken following graduation in a recognised health profession and registration with a health regulatory body e.g. HPC, NMC. It builds upon the underlying knowledge gained in pre registration modules to prepare the student for the protocol led assessment and management of people with acquired disorders of swallowing.
The emphasis here is on the application of underlying knowledge to the understanding of aspects of dysphagia and the work dysphagia trained practitioner.
The students are introduced to some of the most common deficits occurring in the adult caseload (e.g. Stroke, Parkinson's Disease and Dementia). An introduction to other acquired disorders is also included.
To begin this module considers the nature of the typical swallow and the effects of ageing. The subject is examined from a number of perspectives including biological, psychological, sociological, ethical and legal. Health related Quality of Life and client centred decision making are central to the teaching on this module.
In order that the student might understand the nature and aetiology of such problems the discussion is based on early understanding of the anatomy and neurology of swallowing, through study prior to the taught course, and revision of basic concepts in the classroom.
