The aim of the module is to introduce students to the range of physiotherapy core skills and their safe and effective utilisation in relation to common pathologies of the Upper Quadrant. Students will consider the pathophysiological, behavioural and functional changes associated with Upper Quadrant pathologies and a wide range of assessment and treatment strategies and their rationale.

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

-Describe the pathophysiology and medical management of disorders affecting the neuromusculoskeletal system of the Upper Quadrant.
-Demonstrate safe, effective assessment and selection and use of physiotherapeutic techniques relevant to rehabilitation of patients with neuromusculoskeletal disorders of the Upper quadrant. --Explain the principles involved.
-Explain the impact of psychosocial and cultural factors on the management and rehabilitation of patients with Upper Quadrant musculoskeletal disorders.
-Discuss the role of the physiotherapist in the management of peripheral musculoskeletal disorders of the Upper quadrant in a range of patient groups and healthcare settings as part of the Multi -Disciplinary Team.

Module content

-Pathology - soft tissue injuries, rheumatology, fractures, dislocations and bone pathology of the Upper Quadrant.
-Medical, surgical and physiotherapy management of pathologies of the Upper Quadrant.
-Psychosocial influences on rehabilitation of acute and chronic disorders of the Upper Quadrant.
-Assessment and manual therapy techniques for the Upper quadrant.
-Review and evaluation.
