This module examines and assesses the legal protection of human rights in the United Kingdom. The objective is to provide students with an overview of the way in which domestic and international law operates to protect human rights in the UK and to introduce students to some current issues in UK human rights law.
The module typically encompasses examination of aspects both of substantive human rights law and of structural-procedural issues relating to human rights protection and in previous years has included: the framework for human rights protection in the UK and its constitutional implications; freedom of expression; the developing common law protection of privacy; the implications of counter-terrorism law and policy; and the ongoing debate concerning whether the UK needs a new Bill of Rights.
