Module Description:
Mental health problems, in particular anxiety and depression, account for over one-third of all consultations in Primary Care in the UK and the impact of these on individuals, families, communities and health care resources is recognised at a global level. A key strategy to address current and future challenges of this immense area of need is to equip those working in mental health settings with relevant knowledge and skills to enhance access to and effectiveness of services and care delivery through evidence-based, innovative approaches. The programme is directly relevant to clinical practice, using bio-psycho-social framework, students will develop skills in evidence based interventions, including cognitive-behavioural approaches, collaborative case management and community engagement. The purpose of this module is to;
- enhance knowledge and skills surrounding the effective delivery of Mental Health Care and,
- to develop a deeper understanding of the importance of inter-professional, multidisciplinary and multi-agency working in such delivery.
Module content:
- Causation, incidence, prevalence and description of disorders and the impact they have on individuals, families and communities.
- The bio-psycho-social assessment of mental health needs
- Cultural, structural and policy issues for mental health care including an appreciation of both historical and contemporary influences
- Approaches to Mental Health case management
- Evidence-based Psychological Interventions for Mental Health Care Practice: Frameworks, concepts, principles and skills
- Equal opportunities and sensitive responses to individuals with regard for age, culture, race, gender, ethnicity, social and spiritual needs.
- Educating service users and carers: Choice, empowerment and autonomy
- Understanding the inter-face between primary health care and secondary specialist mental health services
