EC203 focuses on the economic history of economic growth and technical change since the 'second industrial revolution' stemming from the advances in the latter part of the 19th century. The module will seek to explore not only the implications of technical change for issues such as economic inequality and welfare, but also the economic factors that determine the patterns and pace of change, particularly enterprise governance, the nature of competition, and finances they harnessed (or not) scientific knowledge for the purposes of innovation. In so doing, EC203 will introduce students to modern approaches to economic growth, together with the measurement of technical advance and productivity, in order to provide a framework for comprehending innovation in key economic sectors in the 20th century and beyond.

Upon completion of EC203, students will have an appreciation of the main patterns of technological change from the mid-19th century to the present, in relation with economic growth, and the ways in which technological advances create upheavals and opportunities across the main sectors of the economy.
