The aim of this module is to introduce students to the key skills that are fundamental to their chosen area of study, and which support the development of a career in that sector. In the Autumn Term there will be three laboratory tasks. In the Spring Term students will undertake a project relevant to their area of study.

Learning outcomes

After completing this module, students will be expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate generic skills, such as problem solving, research methodologies, report writing and presentation techniques.
2. Demonstrate practical skills in the areas of networked and embedded computer systems incorporating media manipulation and security.
3. Perform analysis and interpretation of results from experimental work.
4. Make effective use of project management tools and techniques to develop solutions to simple problems.
