The half module provides an introduction to key concepts used in research on language development throughout the lifespan. Topics will include monolingual and bilingual child language acquisition, second language acquisition by child and adult learners, language loss through aphasia or dementia, and the attrition of the first language in second language learners. The module will provide students with an overview of research findings from a broad range of studies, including ongoing studies in the Centre for Language Development throughout the Lifespan (LaDeLi) at the University of Essex.
Aims:
The module aims to provide a basic introduction to key concepts, methods, and theoretical approaches in research on language development throughout the lifespan.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this half module, students should be able to:
i) define core terms and concepts in language development research,
ii) describe commonly used empirical methods in language development research,
iii) identify core issues in research on language development throughout the lifespan and discuss the core assumptions of relevant theoretical models,
iv) summarise and present empirical results from previous studies clearly and accurately,
v) critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of research into linguistic development throughout the lifespan,
vi) present ideas in a structured, coherent and cohesive fashion, using appropriate style and terminology, and demonstrating clarity, precision, and accuracy.
